What if I don’t feel comfortable talking about personal issues at first?

It is completely natural to feel hesitant or find it difficult to talk about personal matters, especially at the beginning of therapy. A psychologist is trained to work with these feelings and can support you in gradually building comfort and trust within the therapeutic relationship.

Here are some ways to approach this:

  • Give yourself time: Trust takes time to develop. You are not expected to feel comfortable right away. As you get to know your psychologist, the process will become easier and more natural.
  • Talk about your discomfort: You can share that you find it difficult to open up. This helps the psychologist adapt their approach to your needs and support you more effectively.
  • Explore what makes it difficult: You might feel worried about being judged, feeling exposed, or sharing personal details. Understanding these concerns is an important step, and they can be explored together at your own pace.

When should I consider seeing a psychologist?

It can be helpful to seek support when you feel the need, although this is not always easy to identify.
Some signs that you may benefit from speaking with a psychologist include:

  • Experiencing ongoing mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression, or eating disorders
  • Having recurring physical symptoms without a clear medical explanation (e.g. headaches, stomach discomfort)
  • Noticing a decline in your functioning across areas such as relationships, work, or daily activities
  • Feeling persistent emotional distress over a period of time
  • Finding that strategies you have tried in the past have not been helpful
  • Experiencing significant difficulties in relationships (e.g. with a partner, child, colleague, parent, or friend)
  • Going through grief or loss

If you recognise yourself in any of the above, speaking with a psychologist may help you better understand your experiences, develop coping strategies, and improve your overall well-being.

This list is not exhaustive. There may be many other reasons to seek support, and you do not need to wait until things feel overwhelming in order to ask for help.

What if I have had a negative experience with a psychologist?

A negative experience with a psychologist can affect your willingness to seek support again, and this is completely understandable.
However, each psychologist is different, and one experience does not necessarily reflect what working with another professional will be like. A good therapeutic relationship, based on trust, understanding, and collaboration, can make a meaningful difference.
If you are considering trying again, it may be helpful to reflect on your needs and preferences before choosing a new psychologist. For example, you might consider their area of expertise, therapeutic approach, and level of experience.
You may also find it useful to read reviews, seek recommendations, or have an initial phone conversation to ask questions and get a sense of whether the therapist feels like a good fit for you.

Can I see two psychologists - psychotherapists at the same time?

Working with two psychologists at the same time for the same concern is generally not recommended, as it may create confusion within the therapeutic process.
However, it can be helpful to reflect on the reasons behind this choice. For example, you may be unsure whether your current therapy is meeting your needs or expectations.
If this is the case, it is important to share your concerns openly with your psychologist. Through discussion, you may be able to clarify your goals, adjust the approach, or decide on the next steps together.

Do psychologists prescribe medication?

No, psychologists do not prescribe medication.
Psychologists are trained to provide psychological assessment and psychotherapy. If medication is needed, you may be referred to a psychiatrist or another qualified medical professional.
